On September 16, 2015, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office began investigating a report of a fraudulent check that was cashed at an Amelia business. In the days following, the Sheriff’s Office received two additional complaints of fake checks being cashed in Amelia and learned that a similar incident also occurred within the city limits of Morgan City. Working together, detectives with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and Morgan City Police Department determined that the same male subject went to each of the businesses, presented the fraudulent documents, and used another person’s identification card to cash the checks. The suspect was successful in cashing a total of nearly $2,000 in phony checks. Detectives are seeking the identity of the person pictured in the surveillance video or information on the newer model champagne colored Chevy Malibu associated with the crimes. The suspect is seen getting out of the passenger side of the car while another subject sits in the driver’s seat.
