Sheriff's Office, Berwick PD, & MCPD Find Meth, Xanax in Berwick Residence - 2 Arrested

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert advises that over the 24-hour reporting period, the Sheriff’s Office responded to 31 complaints and reports the following arrests:

 

 

FROM THE NARCOTICS SECTION 

 

Michael Sweetser, Jr., 34, 1730 River Road, Berwick, LA was arrested on September 28, 2017 at 4:38 pm for the following offenses:

  • Improper lane usage
  • Brake lights required
  • Possession of Schedule II (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute
  • Possession of Schedule IV (Xanax) with intent to distribute
  • Possession of Schedule III (steroids)
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor

Clyde Broussard, 44, 1730 River Road, Berwick, LA was arrested on September 28, 2017 at 4:38 pm for the following offenses:

  • Possession of Schedule II (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute
  • Possession of Schedule IV (Xanax) with intent to distribute
  • Transactions involving drug proceeds
  • Possession of Schedule I (marijuana)
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Warrant from Crowley City Court for failure to appear on the charges of driving with a suspended license

Narcotics Section detectives, Berwick Police officers, and Morgan City Police detectives conducted a search warrant at Sweetser’s and Broussard’s residence. While en route to the location, detectives observed Sweetser driving across the center line of the roadway with only one functioning tail light. Sweetser stopped the vehicle at his residence. Detectives detained him pending the investigation and located a bag of crystal methamphetamine on his person. Sweetser was in possession of the illegal drug while driving with a small child in the vehicle. During the execution of the search warrant, detectives detained Broussard, who was in the residence, and located 5 bags of crystal methamphetamine, a bag of marijuana, over 100 Xanax pills, vials of steroids, digital scales and other drug paraphernalia. Detectives collected evidence that Sweetser and Broussard were selling drugs from the residence. Broussard was found to be in possession of $273 cash money suspected of being derived from illicit drug sales. Narcotics detectives estimate the street value of the crystal methamphetamine to be approximately $10,000. Both suspects were transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail is set for Sweetser. Broussard’s bail is set at $85,000.

FROM THE UNIFORMED PATROL SECTION 

Gerard Staub, Jr., 73, 41580 Rue Chene, Ponchatoula, LA was arrested on September 28, 2017 at 1:14 pm on a warrant for simple battery. The warrant stems from an investigation into a reported battery in the Patterson area on September 9, 2017. A deputy collected evidence that Staub pushed a male victim causing the victim to fall to the ground. Staub turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in Morgan City. He was released on a summons to appear in court on December 1, 2017.

 

Salomon Cordoba, V, 23, 808 Jefferson Terrace, New Iberia, LA was arrested on September 28, 2017 at 6:45 pm for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. A deputy responded to a call for service regarding a vehicle fire on US Highway 90 South Frontage Road in Jeanerette. The deputy located the vehicle and the driver who was identified as Cordoba. The deputy smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person as well as other indicators of impairment. The deputy conducted a field sobriety test. Cordoba performed the test poorly. He later registered a 0.193 grams percent blood alcohol concentration on a breath test. The deputy transported Cordoba to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail is set.
